Chronic Stress and Trauma

2075489443Can you even imagine a life without stress?

You’re constantly fueled by stress between your deadlines and obligations. It’s an everyday occurrence!

Life likes to keep us in what I call “go-mode” – for most of us, it can feel like we’re always on the go between work, school, kids, pets, errands… the list goes on…

This continued feeling of pressure and being overwhelmed over long periods is so ingrained in our modern world society that it is often taken “as is,” but we are left to deal with the consequences of the chronic stress we endure on our own.

Addressing chronic stress is never easy – it can even feel abnormal or uncomfortable to feel not-stressed…

Did you know our bodies get hooked on our stress hormones?

The more stress we endure, the more our body produces hormones like cortisol.

When this cycle gets repeated again and again, our body starts to see low levels of these hormones as “abnormal,” and it starts to crave them!

The vicious cycle of stress can take over our internal and external lives!

And when there are layers of trauma added to the mix, it can seem almost impossible to stop the cycle.

1496119232Trauma comes in many forms…

Trauma can be a tragic event for yourself or others.
Trauma can be a loss of a loved one.
Trauma can be abuse.
Trauma can be generational and societal.
Trauma can be a bad breakup or a failed friendship.

No matter what form trauma comes in, it is a completely subjective experience.

It’s our mental and physical reactions to our trauma…

… that have the most lasting impact on our lives – especially if the trauma occurred before you had the resources and support you needed to recover from it.

Trauma causes long-term dysregulation of our nervous system.

When our nervous system is dysregulated, we are affected physically: low energy/fatigue, issues with digestion, body/muscle aches and pains, etc., and mentally: trouble controlling emotions, feeling angry or distrustful, prolonged periods of anxiety, feeling disconnected, etc.

Our body is so in-tune with our mind that when we experience emotional or physical dysregulation, it affects our cognition (the way we think). Trauma predisposes you to a dysregulated nervous system which is why it lends itself to faulty thinking patterns and belief systems – this can look like always anticipating the worst outcome or believing you are not worthy of love and so on.
