“I feel anxious.” “I think I’m depressed.”
Unfortunately, we live in a world where we always hear these phrases.
Our modern lives put a lot of pressure and stress on our plates, and sometimes we can’t keep up.
Society, urgency culture, social media – all these things put us in a position to feel as though we can’t keep up with our peers and ourselves. Leaving us to constantly compare, search for more, and to do things that just aren’t even aligned with who we are.
When we feel as though we are not enough, this is where anxiety and depression can seep in.
It’s more than just a “chemical imbalance.”
Anxiety and depression result from living in a chaotic world. Some might even say they’re defense mechanisms keeping us safe from that world.
Unfortunately, as you know, they make life a constant battle, and you don’t always know what you’re fighting against! What you do know is that your thoughts feel intrusive, repetitive, controlling, and distressing.
Anxiety…
When you’re anxious, you react to your environment as though danger is present. Anxiety can be an underlying issue or a byproduct of chronic stress. When you are anxious, you make decisions out of a place of fear or worry, most likely misjudging or distorting reality. This greatly impacts your relationships with others and (more importantly) yourself.
Depression…
There are other times when the stress of life makes you feel trapped and powerless – even disconnected from yourself. You might speak harshly to yourself, putting yourself down to the point of feeling too “low” or “unworthy” to hang out with others. You start isolating, and spending more time alone affirms those negative thoughts. The depression can deepen to what seems like a point of no return.
Failed attempts to address, suppress, or avoid…
You might be unwittingly trapped in a cycle where your attempts to soothe your anxiety or depression actually make it worse.
Avoidance: “If I don’t think about it, it won’t affect me” or “I’ll think of or do something else.”
Hyper-productivity: “I’m going to be extra productive and do as much as I can – this will make me feel better.”
However, these behaviors don’t address the actual issue and fuel anxiety and depression, thus not breaking the cycle.
I can give you the tools you need to fight back.
